Will Power, the two-time and reigning IndyCar champion, is set to continue his storied career with Team Penske after signing a new multi-year contract. This agreement will see Power remain with the powerhouse team through the 2025 season, with the potential for an option in 2026, as IndyCar gears up for an exciting hybrid era.
David Malsher-Lopez reports that the 2014 and 2022 champion's existing contract concludes at the end of this season. While Power opted not to comment on the new deal, Team President Tim Cindric had not provided a statement at the time leading into the second round of the IndyCar championship at Texas Motor Speedway.
The announcement follows closely on the heels of Verizon’s multi-year extension to continue as the title sponsor for Power's #12 entry. This partnership has been in place for over a decade, signifying continued faith in Power and Team Penske amid the changing landscape of IndyCar.
Reflecting on his journey, Power began his career in the Champ Car World Series, competing for Walker Racing before transitioning to KV Racing after the series merged with the Indy Racing League in 2008. He benefited from an initial one-off ride with Penske in 2009, a sub for Helio Castroneves that unexpectedly evolved into a full-time role.
"I was only supposed to be in the car for one race, but it turned into something special," said Power, reminiscing about his shift into the Penske family. His debut with Penske saw him claim victory at Edmonton, a precursor to a prolific career filled with accomplishments.
Despite facing adversity, including a serious back injury during practice at Sonoma, Power's resilience paved the way for a full-time commitment from Penske starting in 2010. Under Penske’s banner, he achieved multiple victories and came close to the championship title, finishing as a runner-up three consecutive years. In 2014, he finally clinched his first championship, a feat that was quickly followed by his triumph at the iconic Indianapolis 500.
"Winning the Indy 500 was a dream come true for me and a testament to the support of my team," Power said. His successful tenure continued as he delivered another series championship for Team Penske last year.
