Bobby Fong broke into the 2026 winner's circle for the first time with a draft-and-pounce victory in Race 2 of the Quad Lock Superbike Championship at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Sunday, ending a nine-lead-change slugfest with series leader Matthew Scholtz on the final run to the line.
Scholtz, who had dominated Saturday's Race 1 by more than seven seconds, looked set for a repeat when he streaked away from the front row to take the lead into Turn 1 and carve out a gap up the hill at Road Atlanta's opening esses.
"Watch the magic at the top of this hill from the Strack Yamaha Racing rider — this is where he was so good yesterday. At the top he pulls out a big gap," the commentary team noted as Scholtz cleared the field. "Look at the gap. You can see it already."
But unlike Saturday, the South African was never allowed to escape. Fong and Petrucci Attack Performance Yamaha teammate JD Beach hunted him down, and from there the race turned into an 18-lap knife fight between the Yamahas at the front. By mid-race the position between Fong and Scholtz had changed hands eight times, with Shawn Dylan Kelly shadowing the pair in third.
"Bobby might — might be telling Bobby, hey, does he have a problem? I think Matthew maybe wants to be in this seat," the commentary read as the pair began to play psychological games. "We'll see."
The deciding move came on the penultimate lap. Fong timed his exit from Turn 7 perfectly, drafted Scholtz down the back straight and got the Yamaha stopped on the inside for the long right-hander at Turn 10 — the same corner where Scholtz had been winning the braking battle all weekend.
"So Bobby Fong takes the lead — our ninth lead change of the race. Matthew Scholtz had a look down on the back straightaway with acceleration for Bobby Fong and all that Attack team, as he goes tight into here as well," the commentary called. "Full gas for Bobby Fong to the line, takes the chequered flag and his first win of 2026 in the Quad Lock Superbike class."
Fong crossed the line 2.9 seconds clear, with Scholtz second and Shawn Dylan Kelly — who had also endured a tough Saturday — third to bank the final rostrum place. Fastest lap went to Scholtz on a 1:24 flat, with Fong just one tenth slower at 1:24.1.
Behind the podium, a 5-second grid-infringement penalty handed to defending MotoAmerica champion Cameron Beaubier complicated his race as he fought for fourth in a pack that included Alex Dumas on his return from injury. Benjamin Smith, new to the team, and Jason Uribe — making the jump to Superbike this weekend — also featured in an entertaining top-ten scrap.
The result puts Fong firmly back in the title conversation after a quiet start to the year and dents Scholtz's early ownership of the Quad Lock Superbike Championship. With Road Atlanta banked at a win apiece, the paddock heads to the next round with the series leader still Scholtz, but with a new story at the front of the grid.
