The excitement for the 2026 Supercars Championship season is building as the schedule for the Sydney 500 has been officially released. This year, the event will take place at the iconic Sydney Motorsport Park from February 20 to 22, marking the beginning of the racing calendar with a series of exhilarating competitions.
In a thrilling start, Cameron Waters narrowly defeated Broc Feeney in Race 2 during the previous Sydney 500. This year, the Supercars will return to the same venue for a highly competitive three-day extravaganza.
"The Sydney 500 is always a fantastic event, both for the teams and the fans. We are excited to kick off the new season here, where the atmosphere is electric, and the racing is always intense,” said Supercars CEO Shane Howard.
The event will feature a packed schedule. The first race day, Friday, February 20, will commence with a 100km sprint race starting at 7:50 PM AEDT, followed by a 200km main event on Saturday, February 21, slated for 7:35 PM. The grand finale will take place on Sunday, featuring another 200km race kicking off at 4:05 PM.
"We're expecting a great turnout this year, especially with free spectator entry on Friday. It’s a fantastic opportunity for fans to experience the debut of the Toyota Supra against competitive vehicles like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro," added Howard, emphasizing the accessibility of the event.
The excitement does not stop with Supercars alone, as the Sydney 500 will also host several support categories, including the Super2 Series, Touring Car Masters, V8 SuperUtes, and the Toyota GR Cup.
The full schedule for each day has been carefully organized to maximize the enjoyment for attendees. On the opening day, Friday, various categories will engage in multiple practice sessions, with Supercars hitting the track for a practice run at 1:55 PM, followed by qualifying rounds.
"The practice sessions are crucial for us as the team prepares for the races. Every lap counts toward our performance, and we must hit our marks right from the start," noted Supercars driver, Broc Feeney.
On Saturday, the action will ramp up with a mix of races and qualifying heats across the support categories commencing early in the day, alongside spectator events, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere. The highlight event, the Top Ten Shootout for Supercars, is scheduled for 4:35 PM.
"The Top Ten Shootout is always a thrilling part of the weekend as it sets the stage for who will lead the charge on race day," mentioned Cameron Waters, another prominent Supercars driver.
Fans can expect a variety of entertainment options throughout the event, including live performances during intermissions and opportunities to engage with drivers and teams.
As the 2026 Supercars Championship draws closer, anticipation is mounting for what promises to be a spectacular event at Sydney Motorsport Park. The mingling of high-speed action and community involvement paints a promising picture for motorsport enthusiasts.
"This season opener is just the beginning, and we're eager to see how the teams and drivers perform against each other on the track. Every year brings new challenges, and we can’t wait to see who’ll rise to the occasion," concluded Howard, speaking about the potential excitement during the weekend.
With race stakes high and fans eager to witness their favorite teams and drivers compete, the Sydney 500 is set to be a remarkable showcase for Supercars and its vibrant fanbase. Car enthusiasts and casual fans alike will have every reason to celebrate as the countdown continues towards the official opener of the Supercars season.
