  • 2.I’m still leading, which is the most important thing.” The current drivers’ standings reflect Neuville's lead over Evans by six points, a margin that could be pivotal as the season progresses.
  • 3.“We’ll have to regroup and come back stronger.” Completing the top ten was Jourdan Serderidis, who finished with a solid performance in his Ford Puma, alongside Škoda Fabia Rally2 star Kajetan Kajetanowicz, who also made an impression during the event.

Kalle Rovanperä celebrated his second victory at the Safari Rally Kenya, securing the win amidst challenging conditions. Competing in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) on April 16, 2024, Rovanperä, alongside co-driver Jonne Halttunen, showcased a masterful blend of speed and strategy that allowed him to finish ahead of fellow drivers Takamoto Katsuta and Adrien Fourmaux.

The event, known for its grueling stages, marked Rovanperä’s 12th career win in the WRC. He built an impressive lead early in the rally, winning all of the rocky stages around Lake Naivasha on Friday and finishing Saturday with a two-minute advantage over his competitors. “It’s always special to win here,” Rovanperä reflected. “Also, a legendary event for Toyota. We’ve always been so good here and that’s continuing.”

Rovanperä’s triumph not only solidified his standings but also emphasized Toyota's dominance, as Katsuta’s second-place finish provided the manufacturer a critical boost in the championship. With this result, Toyota extended its lead in the manufacturers' championship to four points over Hyundai Motorsport.

“A big thanks to the team, everybody made a big effort to make the car work so well,” Rovanperä acknowledged. “I think me and Jonne did a good job, I don’t think you can have a better Safari Rally than we did. No issues, clever driving and I think it was a good effort.”

Elfyn Evans, who was in contention for a podium finish, faced difficulties during Saturday’s stages. He had to stop twice for tire changes, resulting in a finishing time that left him over four minutes behind Rovanperä. Despite this setback, Evans remains in second place in the drivers’ championship standings, trailing leader Thierry Neuville.

Neuville faced his own set of challenges during the rally. The Belgian driver, piloting his Hyundai i20 N, encountered fuel pressure issues on Saturday, causing significant delays. Additionally, he suffered suspension damage on Sunday. “It was a difficult weekend,” Neuville admitted. “But we managed to salvage some points. I’m still leading, which is the most important thing.”

The current drivers’ standings reflect Neuville's lead over Evans by six points, a margin that could be pivotal as the season progresses.

The rally witnessed other competitors facing complications as well. Esapekka Lappi experienced mechanical failures, including two broken gearboxes, while Ott Tänak struggled to recover from suspension issues that placed him in eighth overall by the end of the competition. “It just wasn’t our rally this time,” Tänak remarked. “We’ll have to regroup and come back stronger.”

Completing the top ten was Jourdan Serderidis, who finished with a solid performance in his Ford Puma, alongside Škoda Fabia Rally2 star Kajetan Kajetanowicz, who also made an impression during the event.

As the dust settles from the Safari Rally Kenya, attention shifts to the upcoming Croatia Rally scheduled from April 18 to 21, based in Zagreb. This will be another crucial event for drivers looking to gain momentum in the championship.
