In a strategic move to strengthen its factory driver roster, BMW M Motorsport has officially enlisted Raffaele Marciello ahead of the upcoming FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season. The addition of the talented driver follows his successful six-year tenure with Mercedes-AMG, during which he solidified his reputation as a formidable competitor in global GT3 racing.
Marciello's accomplishments with Mercedes-AMG include back-to-back titles in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup and the prestigious CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa victory in 2022, showcasing his skill and consistency. He concluded his time with the Stuttgart brand in style, securing a commanding World Cup victory at Macau earlier this month, a triumph that both celebrated his legacy and marked a transition in his career.
As he transitions to BMW, Marciello is anticipated to play a pivotal role in Team WRT's Hypercar program, which will feature the BMW M Hybrid V8 in the WEC next season. Furthermore, he is expected to contribute to BMW's GT3 driver lineup, though specifics regarding his involvement are yet to be revealed.
"I am very excited to be a BMW M works driver starting from the upcoming season," said Marciello. "This is a significant step in my career. Having been a racing driver for many years, I am immensely proud to be able to compete for BMW M Motorsport in the future."
Rumors had previously linked Marciello to BMW for several months, as he sought entry into the growing realm of top-class prototype racing. This opportunity arose partly due to the limitations expressed by Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing, as their chief Stefan Wendl acknowledged the brand's inability to fulfill Marciello's aspirations for further development and growth in that arena.
Andreas Roos, head of BMW M Motorsport, expressed enthusiasm about signing the Swiss driver, framing it as an irreplaceable opportunity for the brand. "I am very pleased to welcome Raffaele Marciello to the BMW M Motorsport family," said Roos. "When you have the opportunity to sign a top-caliber driver like him, you must seize it. He has consistently demonstrated his prowess for years, particularly in GT cars."
Roos further elaborated on Marciello's diverse racing background, stating, "But there is much more to him. Before his GT career, Raffaele Marciello showcased his class multiple times in open-wheel racing. In our view, he brings the perfect all-around package with his versatility to further strengthen our already high-quality roster of works drivers."
The excitement surrounding Marciello's addition comes as BMW prepares for an intensive lineup of racing programs in the coming years, offering varied opportunities for deployment across different categories. Roos noted that details regarding Marciello's specific racing plans would be forthcoming, piquing the interest of fans and analysts alike.
Prior to finalizing his contract with BMW, Marciello was also in discussions with Lamborghini regarding their upcoming SC63 LMDh program, set to debut in both the WEC and IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup. Giorgio Sanna, Lamborghini's head of motorsport, confirmed that while there were "fair discussions" with Marciello, it ultimately did not lead to a signed agreement.
As Marciello embarks on this new journey with BMW, the motorsport community eagerly anticipates his contributions in the Hypercar category and his continued presence in the GT3 series. His transition is not only a significant personal milestone but also a critical moment for BMW M Motorsport as it seeks to establish itself firmly in the competitive landscape of endurance racing.
