The 2016 Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis unfolded on May 14, 2016, as the fifth installment of the IndyCar Series season. This highly anticipated race occurred on the infield road course of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in Speedway, Indiana, and featured a total of 82 laps over a distance of 200 miles.
Simon Pagenaud, racing for Team Penske, showcased his prowess by securing pole position with an impressive qualifying time of 1:08.6868. "It's great to start from pole, and I feel confident in the car's setup," said Pagenaud ahead of the race. This event served not only as a vital race in itself but also as part of the broader festivities leading up to the iconic Indianapolis 500.
As the race commenced under cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, Pagenaud maintained his lead going into the first turn. However, the excitement quickly turned to caution when contact was made between Tony Kanaan and Sébastien Bourdais, leading to the first full course caution of the day. "It was unfortunate to end my day so early, especially in such a big event," Kanaan stated post-race.
Following the brief caution period, the race resumed with Pagenaud in front, while James Hinchcliffe seized the second position. However, laps rolled on, and drama unfolded when Will Power lost control of his car near turn seven while fending off Alexander Rossi. "I just pushed a bit too hard, and the car let go," Power explained after finishing 19th.
Pit stops became crucial as the race continued. Around lap 20, Graham Rahal momentarily ascended to the lead, having extended his fuel run prior to his pit stop. However, Pagenaud quickly regained control after managing to get around Charlie Kimball, who had capitalized on the pit strategy.
A key moment arrived on lap 37 when Bourdais' car came to a stop, prompting another caution. Most of the leading drivers took this opportunity to pit while Hélio Castroneves and Conor Daly opted to stay out, allowing Castroneves to take the lead. "I felt good out there, and it was key to maintain track position during the pit stops," said Castroneves.
Daly then surprised many by overtaking Castroneves and holding the lead for 14 laps until he too pitted. With the race progressing, Pagenaud once again found himself at the front after Castroneves made his stop. His momentum proved unassailable as he continued to extend the gap, finishing the race approximately 4.5 seconds ahead of Castroneves.
Reflecting on his victory, Pagenaud noted, "I feel really good about this win. It’s all about the teamwork and strategy. Three in a row feels amazing, and I’m looking forward to what's next." This triumph marked his third consecutive win, significantly boosting his standing in the championship.
Close behind, Castroneves finished in second place while Hinchcliffe claimed third and praised the competitive nature of the race, stating, "Every lap was a battle, and it’s always great to be in contention for a podium finish."
Despite dealing with setbacks throughout the race, Rahal made an impressive comeback from starting at the back of the grid to finish fourth, which left him satisfied with the team's performance. Post-race, Rahal remarked, "It was a challenging day but a solid finish. We’ll take the momentum into the next races."
The event served as a stepping stone for the upcoming Indianapolis 500, with many teams, including those of Pagenaud and Castroneves, looking to carry their successes forward into one of the season’s most prestigious races. With the drivers now focusing on the monumental event ahead, fans eagerly anticipate what the season will bring next. As Pagenaud leads the points standings, the competitive landscape of IndyCar promises thrilling developments in the following weeks.
