The 2024 Moto2 season witnessed a significant event at the Catalan Grand Prix in Barcelona on May 26, where Ai Ogura captured his first victory of the year. The race was a strategic battle filled with excitement, as Ogura maneuvered his way through the field to seize the moment at his teammate’s expense.
"I had to fight hard to come through the pack, but the team worked perfectly today," said Ogura, representing MT Helmets - MSI Boscoscuro. He began in tenth position but, after a series of calculated moves, found himself challenging up front by the time the race neared its midway point.
Sergio Garcia, starting from pole, initially took command but was soon challenged by Aldeguer, who pushed past him at the beginning of lap two. Aldeguer’s ride, however, took a turn for the worse when he received a penalty for exceeding track limits. "I was just trying to keep pace, but the limits got the better of me," Aldeguer lamented after his early exit from contention.
As Aldeguer fell back, Ogura seized the opportunity to capitalize on the situation. During lap 18, he showcased his skill by slipping into the slipstream of Garcia, executing a decisive move to take over the lead. "Once I got the sight of him, I knew I had to push harder," Ogura recalled. He ultimately crossed the finish line in 36m 33.540s, establishing a lead of 3.816 seconds.
Garcia noted, "We had a great battle, but I couldn’t hold off Ai today. He was just too fast at the end," as he claimed second place and extended his podium streak this season. Jake Dixon of the CFMoto Inde Aspar Team rounded out the podium in third, marking a triumphant return after struggling with injuries earlier in the season.
Dixon’s steadiness in the challenging race earned him his first points of the year. After starting in eleventh, he quickly found himself pushing through a chaotic field filled with other competitors, all striving for dominance. "I just focused on staying safe and capitalizing on others’ mistakes," Dixon explained.
Jeremy Alcoba also had an exciting race, bouncing back from a difficult start position to engage in fierce dueling with a pack of riders as he finished in fourth. "Fighting back from 22nd is never easy, but it's moments like these that you live for," Alcoba said, referencing his impressive climb through the ranks.
The Catalan Grand Prix set the stage for the ongoing rivalry in the Moto2 category, with a range of penalties and thrilling overtakes marking a race filled with drama. Several riders, including Fermin Aldeguer and Celestino Vietti, faced disappointing outcomes as they were forced to retire from the race early on.
As the 2024 Moto2 championship progresses, the Catalan GP underscored the intensity of the competition, showcasing new talents and established riders battling fiercely for the top spots. The victory for Ogura presents a significant milestone in his career, hinting at a promising trajectory for the rest of the season.
"Winning here is a dream come true, especially at such an iconic race," Ogura reflected, highlighting the honor of performing well at a home circuit for many competitors on the grid. With the momentum gained from this race, fans can anticipate a thrilling remainder of the season as the riders prepare for the challenges ahead.
