"It feels nice after last year, it was a big disappointment," said Evans, reflecting on his performance after a challenging 2022 season. The 34-year-old previously achieved runner-up status in 2020 and 2021 but faced disappointment last year, finishing fourth. His triumph at this rally marks a significant improvement.
On the road to victory, Evans showcased his prowess by winning four of the 22 stages, demonstrating his command over the vehicle in tricky conditions. He initially took the lead during the second stage and adeptly built a comfortable margin on a rainy Friday.

Evans' primary competitor for the runner-up position in the championship, Thierry Neuville, encountered troubles during stage six, crashing out of contention and leaving Evans with a clearer path. Furthermore, eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier received a one-minute penalty after experiencing late service delays due to necessary chassis repairs on his GR Yaris Rally1 car, further widening Evans' margin.
Throughout the season, Evans has proven to be a formidable competitor, having already captured victories at the Croatia Rally in April and Rally Finland in August. His consistency and skill have kept him in contention, culminating in this significant victory at Rally Japan.
