Chaz Mostert has made motorsport history at the 2024 Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight, winning both races and completing a clean sweep over the weekend. After dominating the first race on Saturday night, Mostert capitalized on his momentum, once again outpacing his competitors for victory in Race 16 on Sunday.
The driver from Gold Coast, representing Walkinshaw Andretti United, expressed gratitude towards his team, stating, "It’s just a credit to the whole Walkinshaw Andretti United crew. We obviously rolled out a pretty good car and kept chipping away at it." His victory propelled him to second place in the overall championship standings, now just 105 points behind championship leader Will Brown heading into the next race at Symmons Plains.
This successful weekend marked a significant turnaround for Mostert, who reduced his points gap from a staggering 279 points after Darwin. It is notably the first time since 2015 that he has achieved back-to-back race wins, and he made history by sweeping an entire race weekend for the first time in his career.
Mostert's most recent win at Sydney Motorsport Park came with significant pressure, as he was closely pursued by Ford teammate Cam Waters and championship leader Brown. Reflecting on the race's final laps, Mostert shared, "I’m not sure what happened in those last 10 laps but when you’re leading and you’ve got a bit of a gap, you think something is going to go wrong. It took me all the way back to go kart days when you’re seven or eight and winning a state title and you hear the engine note change and all this kind of stuff. The last 10 laps were hell for me."
In the decisive two-stop strategy adopted for Mostert, his team’s planning shone through as he methodically chased down his one-stop rivals in the race’s final stretch. After a competitive battle for position, he regained the lead from Waters with just 11 laps remaining, finally crossing the finish line before any other competitor.
Waters, who finished in second place, led the field momentarily after Cameron Hill and Jack Le Brocq executed their pit stops. But as the race unfolded, Brown remained in contention until the end, ultimately capturing the third podium spot.
During the race, the top positions were keenly contested, and there were notable moves throughout the field as competitors fought for crucial points. M. Payne of Penrite Racing seized fourth position, with several key drivers like Davison, Kostecki, and Golding also securing top ten finishes, further emphasizing the racing depth witnessed at the event.
Mostert's consistent performance not only elevated him in the standings but also created momentum and excitement heading into the upcoming races. After this stellar showcase in Sydney, he is eager to maintain his form as the season progresses.
Reflecting on his achievements, Mostert's contributions this weekend have undoubtedly left an indelible mark within the Supercars Championship. As the gears turn towards Symmons Plains, motorsport enthusiasts eagerly await whether he can continue this remarkable streak.
