The 2025 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, scheduled for February 16, is set to feature an exciting grid after chase Briscoe's impressive qualifying performance placed him at the front.
Briscoe, representing Toyota and driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, earned the pole position during qualifying on February 12. His lap of 49.249 seconds, clocked at a speed of 182.745 mph, was unmatched, making him the first Toyota driver to start from pole in the history of the prestigious event. "A great way to start our season," said Briscoe. "Unbelievable way to start off the year. Unbelievable way to start off with Toyota. To be able to be the guy to deliver them the first anything when they’ve already accomplished so much is pretty cool."
Briscoe edged out Austin Cindric, the winner of the 2022 Daytona 500, by a slim margin of just 0.076 seconds. Cindric, who finished qualifying with a speed of 182.463 mph, will start alongside Briscoe at the front of the pack. As Briscoe reflected on his milestone, he expressed gratitude towards his team: "Can’t thank (owner) Coach Gibbs enough, the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization. The whole offseason, everybody kept telling me the focus was trying to qualify better at superspeedways. That’s something I really struggled at last year. For our 19 group to come here and sit on the pole at the biggest race of the year is pretty special."
In terms of race strategy, the upcoming Duel at Daytona on February 15 will determine the starting positions for the remainder of the field. However, both Martin Truex Jr. and seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson have already secured their spots in the race. Truex secured the 22nd overall qualifying time, while Johnson claimed the 29th spot.
Truex shared his relief at qualifying: "Definitely a big relief. You never know what can happen in the Duels, they can get crazy, something on pit road can get you in trouble. Great job to all of the guys. They worked their butts off on this car. They were sweating all afternoon, and luckily, we were able to put a good lap in."
Johnson, driving the No. 84 Toyota for Legacy Motor Club, co-owned by him, expressed his appreciation for securing his place without stress: "What I went through last year (in the Duels) was so frightening, and I’m glad I don’t have to go through it again. I certainly respect this process and don’t envy the guys that have to race their way in."
The rest of the qualifying results revealed a strong showing from Ford drivers, who filled positions two through five, led by Cindric and followed closely by Ryan Preece, reigning Cup champion Joey Logano, and Josh Berry. Denny Hamlin and Austin Dillon rounded out the top ten.
Looking ahead, Briscoe will be at the forefront in Thursday's first Duel race, with Cindric starting the second duel. The unique qualifying format has both odd and even positions filled based on the outcome of these races. The highest-finishing unchartered driver in each Duel will also claim a spot in the season's opening flagship event, heightening the stakes as these qualifying races unfold.
The anticipation for the Daytona 500 is palpable, with Briscoe's historic pole serving as a focal point for what promises to be an exhilarating race. Toyota's breakthrough in pole positioning has added an exciting layer to the competition as teams prepare for one of NASCAR's crown jewels.
