Virat Kohli answered his own form questions in the loudest way possible on Wednesday night, smashing an unbeaten 105 from 60 balls to hand Royal Challengers Bengaluru a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur and confirm their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs.
Kohli's innings featuring 11 fours and three sixes was his ninth IPL century, extending a record that no other batter in the tournament's history has come close to. Along the way, the 37-year-old became the quickest batter to 14,000 T20 runs, reaching the mark in 409 innings and surpassing Chris Gayle's previous record of 423.
RCB chased down KKR's 192 with five balls to spare. Kohli was on the field for the entire chase, walking off with his bat raised after sealing the win.
"The fact I did not score runs in the previous games, it eats me up because I have been playing well," Kohli said after the match. "There is a reason people say pressure is a privilege it keeps you humble."
The Bengaluru captain has spoken often about the relationship between expectation and execution, and Wednesday's century in Raipur fitted neatly into the explanation he offered afterward.
"Good pressure always helps you improve your game. A couple of games that do not go your way, you feel a bit of nervousness and that helps you, it takes a lot of effort, but it helps your game go up," Kohli said.
KKR had set RCB 193 thanks to half-centuries from Angkrish Raghuvanshi (71) and a third unbeaten 49 in three matches from Rinku Singh. Cameron Green, the Australian all-rounder who has been one of KKR's stronger purchases of the 2026 auction, added 32 from 24 balls with three fours and one six.
Green also bowled, with mixed results. The Western Australian was charged 22 from his two overs by RCB's chasing batters, with Kohli particularly targeting him for 14 from eight deliveries.
For RCB, the chase was anchored by Kohli's quietly clinical pacing. Josh Hazlewood, the Australian quick who has spearheaded RCB's attack across the season, took 1-35 from his four overs, claiming KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane caught-and-bowled for 19. Hazlewood's economy across the four-over spell was decisive in keeping KKR to a sub-200 total despite Raghuvanshi's solid platform.
The win takes RCB to second on the IPL 2026 points table with the playoffs now mathematically confirmed. The franchise has not won the title in 16 seasons of trying the longest active drought in the competition and Wednesday night moves them within sight of a third final appearance, after near-misses in 2009, 2011 and 2016.
Kohli's individual milestones, while statistically dazzling, were framed by his own focus on team trajectory.
"There is a reason people say pressure is a privilege," he repeated as he closed his post-match remarks. "It keeps you humble."
RCB now turn to their final two league fixtures with home advantage in the playoffs still in play, while KKR's playoff race tightens after a third defeat in five matches. The KKR loss leaves them needing wins in their remaining games and net-run-rate help to secure a top-four spot.
The IPL 2026 playoffs begin May 24, with the final scheduled for Ahmedabad on May 31.
