Ugo Ugochukwu celebrated a remarkable achievement by clinching his maiden victory in the Formula 3 championship during the Feature Race in Melbourne. The American driver exhibited a commanding performance that left an impression on fans and competitors alike.
Starting the race from the second position, Ugochukwu faced a minor setback. "I dropped to third on the run down to Turn 1," said Ugochukwu. However, he quickly regained his footing, maneuvering past Freddie Slater and his Campos Racing teammate, Théophile Nael, to take the lead. His skillful overtaking maneuvers were crucial in cementing his dominance throughout the race.
At one point, Ugochukwu had established a substantial lead, stretching it to seven seconds over his rivals. "I was really focused on maintaining my pace and staying consistent," he commented on his strategic racing. However, the race concluded under Safety Car conditions, slightly reducing his margin of victory, yet he crossed the finish line comfortably ahead.
Finishing in second place was Audi-backed Freddie Slater for TRIDENT, marking a solid showing in the race. "It was a competitive race, and I'm proud of how we performed as a team," Slater remarked on his podium finish. Meanwhile, ART Grand Prix's rookie Taito Kato made an impressive debut by securing third place. However, it came after a five-second penalty was imposed on Nael, who initially crossed the line in third but was subsequently dropped to twelfth following a false start. Kato acknowledged his achievement, stating, "Getting my first podium feels amazing, especially in such a tough race."
Following the podium finishers, Bruno del Pino of Van Amersfoort Racing continued his strong form from the previous Sprint Race, finishing fourth. He expressed contentment with his performance, noting, "I wanted to build on my momentum and I think I did that today.” The second ART driver, Maciej Gladysz, along with Enzo Deligny, followed del Pino in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Brad Benavides of AIX Racing showcased an impressive drive, finishing seventh after starting from 18th place. "It was important to stay patient and find my way through the pack," Benavides explained regarding his successful race strategy. Pedro Clerot also achieved an impressive eighth place after starting in 17th, finishing just behind Benavides. The pair's stellar comebacks were met with enthusiasm from their teams and fans.
Completing the top ten were Hitech's Jin Nakamura and Mattia Colnaghi of MP Motorsport, both securing their first points in Formula 3. "Scoring points in my rookie season is incredible, and I’m excited for the rest of the races this year," said Colnaghi after the race.
