Takomo has announced it will provide free replacement drivers to customers who purchased its Ignis D1 model after discovering the club would not receive R&A and USGA conforming status.
The issue came to light through social media posts on Reddit and Facebook, where customers shared emails from Takomo's customer service department addressing the problem.
"We've been made aware of a conformance issue with the Ignis D1 that you've purchased," reads the customer service email. "When the heaviest weight in placed in the toe, some drivers exceed the conforming limitations for competitive use. If you compete with this driver and it gets tested, there's a chance your specific driver won't be qualify."
The email continues: "We're going to get you a new and improved driver ASAP. We're in the process of designing a new version (this will be conforming) of the driver that we will ship to you free of charge."
Takomo has since removed the Ignis D1 from its website while working on the replacement solution.
Takomo CEO Sebastain Haapahovi provided a detailed explanation of the situation in an official statement.
"Over this whole process of launching a driver, we worked closely with the R&A to ensure the driver's conformance," said Haapahovi. "The biggest mistake we made was having too much confidence in our internal testing, which all pointed to a green light for conformance based on R&A standards. Once the driver was submitted to the R&A it became pretty clear that our internal testing systems were not calibrated appropriately and after some back and forth, the R&A gave the red light."
The conformity issue is specific to certain weight configurations. "Ultimately, when the heaviest weight included in the Ignis D1 is placed in the toe and the second heaviest weight is placed in the heel, some of the drivers might break the CT limit," Haapahovi explained.
The company has contacted all buyers and expects to deliver new conforming drivers by July. "At this time, we've received word from the R&A that the new driver prototypes have passed the initial conformance requirements," said Haapahovi.
While redesigning the driver, Takomo plans to make additional improvements. "While we rework the driver, we're taking some liberties to configure the performance for more forgiveness and tweaking the sound profile," Haapahovi noted.
The CEO took full responsibility for the situation. "This situation is ultimately on us, and we've let our customers down," said Haapahovi. "That's why we're working to provide a solution to our customers that they'll love and get a conforming replacement for their bags as quickly as possible."
Technically, this represents a rejection rather than an outright ban. The R&A and USGA operate under the same equipment rules, meaning conformance with one typically equals conformance with the other. As a European company, Takomo worked exclusively with the R&A for testing.
The situation highlights how smaller direct-to-consumer brands sometimes face challenges with the formal submission and testing process. Unlike major manufacturers who routinely submit clubs for conformity testing, smaller brands don't always apply immediately or may skip the process entirely if not targeting competitive play.
Importantly, only "some" Ignis drivers "might" be non-conforming in the specific weight configuration mentioned, creating a nuanced situation rather than a blanket non-conforming status.
This scenario echoes a similar situation that occurred with Wilson's Triton driver following the 2016 Driver vs Driver competition. The winning driver reached retail shelves before completing the full USGA testing process, creating complications for the manufacturer and customers.
Takomo's proactive approach in offering free replacements and maintaining transparent communication with customers demonstrates the company's commitment to resolving the situation. The new conforming driver heads are expected to be ready early this summer, allowing affected customers to continue competitive play with confidence.
