Sunrisers Hyderabad have added South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee to their IPL 2026 squad as a replacement for the injured David Payne, bolstering a pace attack that is also preparing for the imminent return of captain Pat Cummins.
Coetzee is a familiar face on the Indian franchise circuit and arrives with a reputation as a genuine express option. The 25-year-old paceman has operated consistently in the high-140s kmph range in international cricket and brings a genuine attacking threat through the middle overs that SRH has missed during Payne's absence.
Payne, the England left-arm quick, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament, prompting SRH to activate the replacement market. Coetzee's availability through the back end of the IPL window made him a logical short-list name, and the Hyderabad franchise moved quickly to secure his signature.
The timing is significant. With Cummins cleared to return to the XI in Jaipur on April 25 after resolving his back stress issue, SRH will suddenly have the option of pairing the Australian captain with another high-pace strike option. That gives coach Dan Vettori a more aggressive template at both ends of an innings, and pushes the middle-overs role once earmarked for Payne into specialist attacking territory.
Coetzee's pace also suits the grounds left on SRH's calendar. With matches scheduled on slightly harder surfaces in the final third of the league stage, Hyderabad's selectors see a role for a third seamer who can hurry batters and follow up the new ball with a hit-the-deck second spell.
The franchise sits in fourth place with two wins from five matches, inside the playoff cut but not yet safe. Vettori and captain Cummins have openly spoken about the need to solidify their bowling identity through the middle phase, and signing a proven international quick as a like-for-like replacement is a clear statement of intent.
For Coetzee, the move extends his T20 franchise résumé and offers a high-profile platform with South Africa's domestic schedule winding down. After spells with other IPL sides in previous seasons, Coetzee is no stranger to the competition's pressure environment, which should shorten the acclimatisation curve.
Payne, meanwhile, has been released to focus on rehab. The England quick had been used in the Powerplay and death for SRH, and the franchise publicly wished him well in his return to fitness. For Sunrisers, the short-term focus is clear: a fit Cummins and a match-ready Coetzee to power a late-season push into the playoffs.
