Scottie Scheffler delivered an impressive performance at the RBC Heritage, shooting a dazzling 7-under 64 during the third round at Harbour Town Golf Links.
He started the day on fire, recording five birdies within his first six holes. Following a series of pars on the back nine, the World No. 1 golfer concluded his round strongly with two additional birdies in the last three holes.
Despite this stellar round, Scheffler initially held the lead before being overtaken by Matt Fitzpatrick. Heading into the final round, Scheffler sits in solo second at 14-under, three strokes behind Fitzpatrick.
Reflecting on his comeback, Scheffler expressed satisfaction with his position, especially after a slow start in the tournament. He opened with scores of 3-under on Thursday and 4-under on Friday. "Good to be back in the tournament," Scheffler said. "I was a little bit behind the 8-ball going into today, but had a nice round to put myself back in position."
Fitzpatrick, who had a challenging front nine going 1-over, regrouped and charged back with a strong 4-under performance on the back nine, highlighted by an eagle on the 15th hole. Scheffler acknowledged the added pressure from Fitzpatrick's round, stating, "Fitzpatrick goes out today and shoots 64, that's going to make things really hard for me. You need a tiny bit of help, but I can't control what those guys are going to do. If somebody shows up and shoots 28 under, sometimes you just get beat."
Looking ahead to the final round, Scheffler noted the importance of finishing strong, as he remarked, "It's always nice. It's nice finishing that way versus the other way."
The 20-time PGA Tour winner is ready to face the challenge. "So going into today I was just going to do my best and see where that left me," he added. Scheffler and Fitzpatrick are scheduled to tee off in the final round at 1:50 p.m. ET on Sunday, with the stage set for an exciting conclusion to this prestigious event.
