In a thrilling conclusion at the Myrtle Beach Classic, Ryan Fox from New Zealand captured his first title on the US PGA Tour with a spectacular 50-foot chip-in, which clinched a spot in this week's US PGA Championship. Fox's victory came during a nail-biting three-way playoff, finishing the tournament at 15 under par alongside Canadian Mackenzie Hughes and American Harry Higgs.
Fox initially started the final round three shots off the lead but showcased remarkable resilience. He entered the playoff after Hughes stumbled with a bogey on the 18th hole, allowing Higgs to par the final hole, resulting in a dramatic showdown at the end of an intense tournament.
Reflecting on his achievement, Fox stated, "So my wife sort of joked on Friday when I said, 'What can I get you for Mother's Day?' And she goes, 'Well, a trophy would be nice'. So I guess I lived up to my end of the bargain there." Celebrating alongside his wife Anneke Ryff and their two young daughters, the win marked an emotional and joyous occasion, coinciding perfectly with Mother's Day in the United States.
The victory signifies a significant milestone for the 38-year-old golfer, who had experienced a challenging transition to the PGA Tour. "I haven't transitioned probably as well as I would have liked over the PGA Tour. It was tough last year, I managed to just keep my card," Fox recalled. "It's been a scratchy start this year as well."
Despite these challenges, Fox's triumph at Myrtle Beach not only earned him a coveted spot in the major but also provided him with a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. "In this game, you don't get to win very often. You don't get job security very often either. So it's certainly nice to have that," he expressed, illustrating the weight of pressure lifted from his shoulders.
With this win, Fox intends to approach the upcoming US PGA Championship with newfound confidence. He remarked, "Hopefully that takes some pressure off. We'll see how it goes in the next few weeks. But yeah, it's feels like a monkey off my back, that's for sure."
The PGA Championship, which begins at Quail Hollow in North Carolina this Thursday, will see Fox competing among the world's top golfers.
Previously, Fox made his mark on the DP World Tour, securing several victories, including the prestigious BMW PGA Championship in 2023. This win showcased his talent and determination, positioning him well as he continues to navigate the competitive landscape of professional golf.
As excitement builds for the upcoming major, Fox has demonstrated his potential to be a formidable contender, particularly if he can maintain the momentum from his stunning recent performance. With ambitions high, he aims to utilize this victory as a springboard for future success in the sport he loves.
