WWE Backlash 2026 in Tampa is a stacked pay-per-view, and that owes a lot to the storylines that didn't quite fit on the WrestleMania 42 card in Las Vegas.
The main event is the headline. Roman Reigns, freshly back atop the World Heavyweight Championship after dethroning CM Punk on Night 2 of WrestleMania, defends the strap against his bloodline cousin Jacob Fatu in a match that has been simmering since late 2025.
"The show is set to be main evented by Roman Reigns versus Jacob Fatu for the World Heavyweight title," WrestleMia's pre-show analysis explained. "And due to new information surfacing related to Reigns, we could be in for one of the most shocking PLEs in recent memory."
The undercard has serious depth. Sami Zayn challenges Trick Williams for the WWE United States Championship in a match that is generating heel-turn speculation across the dirt sheets. "Other fans have officially turned on Sami Zayn," one wrestling news source reported, "and there have been vocal calls from the fans for Zayn to turn heel, potentially at Backlash this weekend."
The storyline tension is real. "Trick Williams, the reigning US champion, is super popular with the crowd right now," the report continued. "So a double turn could work very well if executed carefully. But the issue with doing a double turn is that WWE may strip away elements of Williams' persona that got him over in the first place. So it's a risky move."
Seth Rollins is — in storyline at least — meant to face Bron Breakker after months of buildup following Rollins' 2025 excommunication from the Vision faction. That match is now in doubt after Breakker's brutal Raw assault on Rollins, finishing with a spear that left commentators questioning whether the former champion would make it to Tampa.
IYO SKY's title defence against Asuka rounds out the major championship slate, with rumours circulating that recently released Kairi Sane could return to interject.
"There are currently rumours that Sane may end up being in a similar situation as our truth was last year," one source noted. "Sane casting Asuka for the match versus Eio Sky could be the way to achieve the return."
Elsewhere, the comedy gimmick storyline of Danhausen and a mystery partner has fans speculating wildly. Royce Keys is the most logical option, having been called up to Smackdown earlier in the year. But the rumour mill has spun considerably wider, with John Cena, Shane McMahon, Carmelo Hayes, CM Punk and even Ted DiBiase Jr. all named.
Michael Cole offered an on-air clue. "Michael Cole recently mentioned on this week's edition of Raw that Danhausen's partner is somebody who loves money," the source reported. "Who else loves money more than anybody else? That being Shane McMahon."
The WrestleMania-to-Backlash pipeline is one WWE has historically used to redirect stories that didn't get full closure on the biggest stage. With Tampa lined up for a smaller venue intimate atmosphere, a number of these matches could deliver the kind of crowd reactions that change the trajectory of the wrestlers involved heading into the summer.
