The Premier Lacrosse League is moving up its 2026 timetable by two full weeks, opening the season on May 8 and uprooting its long-running Albany training camp and opening weekend in favour of Zions Bank Stadium in Salt Lake City.
The schedule, announced jointly with the inaugural Women's Lacrosse League calendar, marks the most significant structural shift the men's competition has made since transitioning to a fixed-city model. The earlier start gives the league a clearer summer runway, allowing it to wrap its regular season before college football monopolises American sports broadcasting in late August.
Utah's elevation to opening-weekend host is particularly notable. The Archers have been one of the league's strongest on-field brands but Albany was previously the league's de facto pre-season home. Moving Week 1 west is part of a broader push to broaden the PLL's geographic footprint and tap fan bases in markets where lacrosse is still in growth mode.
The men's competition will run thirteen regular-season weeks before culminating in the championship final on September 19-20 in Harrison, New Jersey, the league's adopted East Coast home. The All-Star showcase, which has rotated annually since the league's inception, will run July 3-5 with a host venue still to be confirmed.
The Women's Lacrosse League launches one week later on May 15 and runs a tighter nine-week regular season, pausing for a single weekend from July 24-26 to accommodate the World Lacrosse Women's Championship in Tokyo. WLL playoffs and championship return to Subaru Park in Philadelphia from August 14-16, the same Major League Soccer venue that hosted the 2025 PLL Championship Series.
The two leagues will overlap from May 15 onwards, sharing the All-Star July weekend and giving both fan bases dual-league weekends from mid-May through August. League officials have framed that overlap as a strategic asset rather than a scheduling conflict, with broadcaster ESPN previously confirming distinct prime-time slots for each property.
For athletes, the compressed pre-season window puts pressure on collegiate draftees who will need to integrate quickly. The 2026 PLL Draft was completed on April 14, leaving rookies just over three weeks to report, sign and acclimatise before opening weekend. By contrast, the WLL roster cycle has been built with a longer onboarding window, recognising that the first-ever league season carries different operational risks.
The move away from Albany ends a streak that had grown synonymous with PLL pre-season for half a decade. Albany hosted training camp and opening weekend through the league's most visible growth phase, and the city's loss is a reminder of how aggressively the PLL is willing to revisit its own traditions to chase audience expansion.
Utah's Zions Bank Stadium provides a 5,000-seat soccer-specific facility that has been used regularly by Real Salt Lake's MLS Next Pro affiliate. Its surface and lighting profile lend themselves to the kind of evening television windows ESPN has reserved for its new "Saturday Night Lacrosse" branding.
