Josef Newgarden captured the IndyCar Grand Prix of Phoenix on Saturday, driving his Dallara-Chevrolet to victory from second position on the grid at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona.
The Team Penske driver completed all 250 laps, finishing 1.79 seconds ahead of Kyle Kirkwood in a thrilling race that showcased the competitive nature of IndyCar racing. Kirkwood, who started 11th in his Dallara-Honda, delivered an impressive charge through the field to claim second place.
Pole-sitter David Malukas rounded out the podium in third place, bringing his Dallara-Chevrolet home after leading the opening 72 laps of the race. Despite starting from the prime position, Malukas couldn't maintain his early advantage as the race evolved.
The race featured exceptional competition with 18 lead changes among 11 different drivers throughout the 250-lap distance. Christian Rasmussen proved to be a notable factor, leading multiple segments totaling 57 laps despite starting 18th.
Alexander Rossi brought his Chevrolet home in sixth place, while six-time series champion Scott Dixon recovered from a 15th-place start to finish seventh. Scott McLaughlin, Graham Rahal, and Kyffin Simpson completed the top ten.
The race wasn't without its casualties. Defending series champion Alex Palou experienced a disappointing day, retiring after just 21 laps due to mechanical issues. Romain Grosjean's race ended before it began, failing to complete a single lap.
Newgarden's victory propelled him to the top of the championship standings with 78 points, five ahead of runner-up Kirkwood who sits on 73 points. Scott McLaughlin occupies third in the standings with 66 points despite finishing eighth.
The average speed of the race winner was 134.842 mph over the one hour, 51 minute, and 14.4657-second contest. Four caution periods consumed 41 laps of the race, allowing for strategic pit stops and position changes.
