AVONDALE, Ariz. - With a rash of tire issues and a record-tying-number of cautions at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday , it was a war of attrition in the desert for NASCAR Cup Series teams . Certainly, Hendrick Motorsports teams have never shied away from a little adversity. Kyle Larson and the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet team, in fact, have always hung their hats on grit and they showed it again in spades, overcoming an early pit road miscue to come home third. Not far behind was William Byron, who suffered a cut tire in stage two only to take advantage of some late restarts to finish seventh. "Just proud of the team. We definitely know how to fight to get a good finish here at Phoenix, we do it every single time," Larson said. "It took a lot of fight." Larson nearly got into a position to control the race in the late going. He was side-by-side with Ty Gibbs for the lead as the day's final caution flew with 19 laps to go but was just behind at the last scoring loop. That put Larson on the inside of the front row and on two tires after a call from crew chief Cliff Daniels, he was still able to hang on to his first top five of the season and his third consecutive top-three finish at Phoenix . The day turned out to be just what the doctor ordered for Byron as well as the No. 24 team scored its first top 10 of the young season. As is often the case, the intensity and calamity increased as the race wound down. Early, it was fairly calm with all 60 laps of stage one going into the books without caution or incident. Byron was able to pick up a pair of points with a ninth-place finish in the segment. Then came stage two and the chaos began. Four yellow flags flew in the segment and ultimately, it was Larson's turn to claim a couple bonus markers with a ninth-place showing.
