MotoGP has rescheduled the 2026 Qatar Grand Prix to November, confirming that the round originally due in April will now run on the weekend of 8 November at the Lusail International Circuit. The move, announced jointly by Dorna Sports, the FIM and the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, was made in response to the deteriorating geopolitical situation in the broader Middle East region.
"Our priority is always the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in MotoGP," MotoGP chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta said, adding that providing clarity to fans as early as possible had been essential. It was a statement the championship has worked hard to avoid having to make, with calendar stability one of Ezpeleta's central promises to teams and manufacturers ahead of 2026.
FIM president Jorge Viegas backed the decision without hesitation. "Safeguarding our riders, teams, officials and fans must always come first," Viegas said. Abdulrahman bin Abdullatif Al Mannai, president of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, expressed support for the rescheduling and thanked all stakeholders for their understanding.
The decision has forced a domino rework of the back end of the 2026 season. Portimao, previously slated for early November, has been pushed back two weeks to 22 November. The Valencia finale - traditionally the final race of the year - has been shunted a further week to 29 November, extending the MotoGP calendar into December's shadow for only the second time in its history. All other rounds on the schedule remain on their original dates.
For ticket holders affected by the Qatar change, MotoGP has confirmed that existing tickets can be rolled over to the new November date or, alternatively, used at the rescheduled Portuguese or Spanish events in cooperation with promoters in both countries. Dorna Sports has pledged to honour ticket holders' choices on an individual basis.
The reshuffling arrives at a sensitive moment in the championship. Marco Bezzecchi has opened 2026 with a five-race winning streak - a feat only matched by eight riders in MotoGP history - and the factory Aprilia rider now leads the standings by a commanding margin. A season stretched into late November will test team logistics, rider fitness and the championship's increasingly fragile reliance on a front-loaded calendar.
Behind the scenes, Dorna faces the additional challenge of scheduling freight, television production and hospitality across a reworked back end of 2026. Several teams had already made plans for off-season testing based on the original calendar, and while few are willing to criticise the decision publicly, paddock voices were quick to note the cost implications of an extended 2026 campaign.
The most important story, however, is the one the riders and teams themselves did not have to tell: Qatar, long a season opener in MotoGP's calendar, has been deferred on safety grounds and will now sit as a late-season decider in a championship where, if Bezzecchi's Aprilia momentum continues, the title may already be settled by the time the lights go out at Lusail.
