The 2020 Mexico City ePrix, officially recognized as the 2020 CBMM Niobium Mexico City E-Prix, took place on 15 February 2020 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. This race marked the fourth round of the 2019–20 Formula E season and was the fifth iteration of this exhilarating event.
Mitch Evans emerged victorious, having secured his second Formula E win. Starting from the second position on the grid, he managed to outpace his competitors and clinch the top spot. "Winning in Mexico is always special, and to see the fans here makes it even better," Evans remarked following his triumph. António Félix da Costa, racing for DS Techeetah, finished in second place, while Sébastien Buemi of Nissan e.dams rounded out the podium in third, marking his first podium of the season.
With this result, Evans ascended to the pinnacle of the driver's championship standings with 47 points, just edging out Alexander Sims by a narrow margin of one point. "This championship is so competitive; every point counts, and today was crucial for us," Evans said, emphasizing the importance of his victory. Meanwhile, da Costa's consistent performance brought him to third in the standings with 39 points.
The race was not without its challenges. Former championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne faced a setback, as he crashed out of the event. Consequently, he dropped to fourth place in the standings with 38 points. Lucas di Grassi's performance held him in the top five, finishing sixth and maintaining a total of 32 points.
The atmosphere at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was electric, attracting around 41,000 fans. The race unfolded over 36 laps, covering a total distance of 93.816 kilometers. Despite dry weather conditions, the competition was fierce with numerous lead changes and strategic maneuvers.
André Lotterer from Germany initially secured pole position with a time of 1:07.922, showcasing impressive pace. However, the race dynamics shifted as Evans demonstrated unmatched racing strategies, ultimately leading to his victory. Alexander Sims set the fastest lap with a time of 1:10.520 on lap 31, adding to the competitive nature of the event.
Before the race, drivers from Mahindra Racing, Pascal Wehrlein and Jérôme d'Ambrosio, faced considerable penalties, relegating them to the back of the grid. This was due to the team's decision to implement new gearboxes that violated FIA regulations. "It’s disappointing, but we have to make the best of it and focus on our race strategy," Wehrlein commented.
This year, changes to the Mexico City track had been discussed, hinting at modifications to enhance the racing experience. The FIA labeled the event as "subject to circuit homologation," indicating that revisions were in order for improved safety and competition dynamics.
The Mexico City ePrix significantly impacted the standings and set the stage for fierce competition ahead in the 2019–20 Formula E season. With just a few races left, drivers are poised for an intense battle on the track.
Looking ahead, the championship promises further drama as teams gear up for the upcoming races. "We're just getting started; there's a long way to go in this championship," da Costa said, highlighting the unpredictability of Formula E. As the series continues to evolve, fans can expect more exhilarating performances and surprises in the races to come.
