Max Verstappen will lead the pack as the 2025 Formula One season continues, clinching pole position for the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The accomplished driver completed the qualifying session with a standout lap time, marking his seventh pole of the year and further solidifying his late-season championship campaign.
Verstappen needed only a single lap in Q3 to secure the coveted pole. "It was good. I think every segment, the car was very strong. Just trying to put the lap together around here is sometimes very tricky. It's very hot, very strong winds as well – in that first sector having a tailwind is challenging," said Verstappen, reflecting on his successful qualifying session.
The Dutch driver dominated the sprint race earlier in the weekend and capitalized on the chaotic first lap of the race to cut his points deficit to Oscar Piastri down to 55 points with six races left in the season. With Piastri qualifying in sixth, Verstappen noted, "the first run in Q3 was good. Just managed to improve a little bit from Q2. Unfortunately, I couldn't do my final run. It was a bit messy with the out-laps, but luckily, we didn't need it."
Lando Norris of McLaren impressed with his performance, clinching second on the grid. After a challenging start to the weekend, Charles Leclerc of Scuderia Ferrari recovered to place third. Russell will start in fourth position, followed closely by multiple world champion Lewis Hamilton, who qualified fifth. Piastri is under pressure from sixth on the grid as he looks to maintain his lead in the championship standings.
Kimi Antonelli secured seventh place, while Haas’ Ollie Bearman continued to demonstrate his talent by qualifying eighth. Carlos Sainz from Williams and Fernando Alonso in tenth rounded out the top ten, providing a competitive field for the upcoming race.
Verstappen's strategy in qualifying and his performance in the sprint race set a strong precedent for the race ahead. "I am looking forward to the race," Verstappen stated, revealing his determination to continue closing the gap in the championship standings.
With six rounds remaining, the championship race is tightening. The pressure will be on Piastri as he aims to stave off the challenges from Verstappen and other contenders while focusing on driving consistently at the Circuit of the Americas.
