Lloyd Daniel Pierce, born on May 11, 1976, in San Jose, California, has carved out a distinguished career in the world of basketball, notably as an assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers. His extensive experience in the NBA includes tenures with the Philadelphia 76ers, Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and Atlanta Hawks, showcasing his adaptability and expertise in the game.

Pierce's basketball beginnings trace back to Yerba Buena High School, where he made the varsity team as a freshman. He quickly developed a reputation as a defensive powerhouse, which earned him a full scholarship to Santa Clara University. During his college career, he played alongside future NBA stars Steve Nash and Marlon Garnett, leading the Santa Clara Broncos to the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament three times.
“Playing in the NCAA tournament is something that stays with you for life,” Pierce noted. “It instilled in me a work ethic and a competitive spirit that I carry to this day.”
Despite not being selected in the 1998 NBA Draft, Pierce pursued a professional playing career, which spanned four seasons internationally. His travels took him to teams in Mexico, Australia, Germany, and Turkey, providing him with a broad perspective on the game.
Transitioning from player to coach, Pierce began his coaching career at Santa Clara in the 2002-03 season as a volunteer director of basketball operations. He quickly moved up the ranks, serving as an assistant coach until 2007. His time there solidified his foundation in coaching, leading to his eventual role with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2007 to 2010 as the coordinator for player development.
“At every stop along my journey, I’ve learned the importance of connecting with players,” Pierce said. “It’s about understanding their needs and helping them to grow.”
After a brief stint with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, Pierce joined the Memphis Grizzlies, where he gained valuable experience under head coach Lionel Hollins. He continued to build his reputation in player development before making his way to the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013.
“In Philadelphia, I took on a significant role in defensive strategies. Being able to collaborate and contribute during critical moments is rewarding,” Pierce remarked about his experience there, where he played a crucial role in playcalling during timeouts.
On May 11, 2018, Pierce reached a new pinnacle in his career when he was appointed head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. While his tenure extended until March 2021, finishing with a 14–20 record before his dismissal, Pierce emphasized growth in the position.
“Every coach faces challenges. It’s about how you respond that counts,” Pierce stated, indicating that the experience taught him valuable lessons about leadership and resilience.
Upon leaving Atlanta, he joined the Indiana Pacers as the lead assistant coach, where he continues making an impact on the team’s strategies and player development. His commitment to fostering talent remains the cornerstone of his coaching philosophy.
“Here in Indiana, the potential of the players is immense, and I’m excited to be part of their development,” Pierce affirmed.
