Lando Norris has officially made history as the new world champion! Starting the season as the top contender, he managed to fulfill those high expectations even with a challenging journey to the title.
The strategic efforts by McLaren played a critical role in ensuring Norris finished atop the standings. The team crafted a plan to maintain control while maximizing the chances of both Norris and his teammate, Oscar Piastri.
"It is by no means an easy task to create a strategy that suits both drivers, maximizes their chances as individuals, and simultaneously prevents Verstappen from spoiling the party," said a McLaren executive. "But it seems McLaren executed this in truly phenomenal fashion."

At the heart of their strategy at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was the decision to have their drivers start on different tire compounds. Norris took to the track on medium tires, aiming to stay close to Max Verstappen, while Piastri began on hards, intending to extend his first stint strategically.
"Since Oscar required something genuinely unexpected, such as a Safety Car, a longer first stint increased his chances of capitalizing should an opportunity arise," explained Norris. Meanwhile, having one driver ahead of the pack allowed McLaren to adapt and support Norris as needed.
The excitement kicked off from the start, with all three title contenders performing exceptionally well. Piastri executed a daring move into Turn 9 on the opening lap, overtaking Norris to seize P2. However, McLaren's strategic design maintained its integrity and control over the race.
Things took a turn for the better with George Russell’s poor start, dropping him down two places before even reaching Turn 1. This misstep effectively eliminated Russell from podium contention, while Charles Leclerc soon replaced him and applied significant pressure on Norris in the early laps.
"Up to lap 10, he remained within Norris’ DRS window and delivered excellent pace considering how the SF-25 is clearly a step below the McLaren car," noted race analysts. Throughout the race, Norris fended off Leclerc's attempts to overtake brilliantly, marking one of the pivotal moments of the Grand Prix.
As the race progressed beyond lap 10, both Norris and Leclerc began to struggle on their medium tires. In a decisive move, McLaren became the first to pit, effectively avoiding the risk of a Ferrari undercut. "Norris produced a fantastic in-lap, which was crucial for our race strategy," said a McLaren strategist.
Ferrari was quick to react, mirroring McLaren's pit strategy. However, Norris faced a challenging re-entry as he came back onto the track in traffic with slower cars. Yet, he managed to navigate through the pack without losing significant ground to Verstappen.
After an impressive overtaking maneuver on Yuki Tsunoda, Norris appeared well on his way to securing a vital third place—and with it, the world championship. As he maintained a steady pace while also keeping a safe distance from Leclerc, his path to victory became clearer.
When Leclerc pitted on lap 40 in a bid to execute an undercut, McLaren countered immediately and brought Norris in for another swift stop. "We neutralized Ferrari’s attempt with precision," the McLaren team noted. The gap between the two drivers remained stable, demonstrating McLaren’s strategic competence throughout.
Interestingly, the two-stop strategy had not been their initial plan. Piastri's success on hard tires showcased their alternative approach. Norris, however, switched to a fresh set of hards post-second pit stop, which ultimately paid off as Leclerc's mediums began to lose traction.
As the gap widened, Norris remained unchallenged on his pursuit of the championship.
Meanwhile, Piastri had his own remarkable race, extending his hard tire stint for 40 laps and keeping an eye on potential opportunities. His tactical patience added an additional layer to McLaren’s overall strategy on an electrifying day in Abu Dhabi.
McLaren’s dual-strategy execution exemplified effective teamwork and insight, allowing Norris to claim his first Formula 1 World Title and paving the way for a promising future for the team.
