Justin Allgaier has been tapped as the latest replacement driver for Alex Bowman's No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend. The announcement came through the team's paint scheme reveal, though the page was reportedly removed from their website later on March 10.
Bowman's absence stems from vertigo symptoms that began after he exited his car during the race at Circuit of the Americas. The condition forced him to miss the Phoenix race, where Anthony Alfredo took over driving duties and finished 33rd.
This marks the third different substitute driver for Bowman's ride in recent weeks. Myatt Snider, who was serving as a spotter for FOX broadcaster Jamie Little, initially replaced Bowman at COTA and finished 36th before Alfredo stepped in at Phoenix.
Hendrick Motorsports has maintained cautious optimism about Bowman's recovery while prioritizing his health above racing commitments.
"Alex has worked very hard over the last several days," said Jeff Andrews, president of Hendrick Motorsports, in a March 5 press release. "We're encouraged by the progress he's making, but we have to prioritize his health above all else. It's obviously frustrating for him because he's a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We'll continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he's medically cleared."
Denny Hamlin, who missed four races in 2013 due to a compression fracture, offered perspective on what Bowman might be experiencing while watching others drive his car.
"This Alex thing, I don't know, like, do we know whether the reason he got out of the car [last week] is connected to this week's vertigo or not? ... Seems like something's connected. I hope he gets better," Hamlin said Monday on Actions Detrimental. "I've been there in the sense of having to watch someone else — listen, this is not like you're a basketball player, and you're injured and on the bench and there's a new guy out there in the starting five. The guy is wearing your jersey, you know what I mean?"
Hamlin elaborated on the unique psychological challenge drivers face when sidelined.
"The guy is wearing your jersey, and he wears his hair the same as you. It's like a clone of you because in a car, you don't see the person, you just see the helmet, the gloves, you see the car. Trust me, it's very weird as a driver seeing someone else in your suit and in your car. It's wild and it's certainly not pleasant."
Allgaier brings extensive NASCAR experience to the temporary role, having competed regularly in the Xfinity Series where he's been a championship contender. His appointment suggests Hendrick Motorsports is preparing for the possibility that Bowman's recovery may take additional time.
The Las Vegas race will be closely watched to see how Allgaier performs compared to the previous substitute drivers, while fans await updates on Bowman's medical progress and potential return date.
