John Cena is the wildcard of WWE Backlash 2026, and the company appears to be quite happy to let the speculation simmer. The recently retired 17-time world champion is officially advertised for the Tampa event, and the rumour mill is running at full tilt.
"John Cena is officially said to be part of Backlash this weekend," wrestling outlet WrestleMia reported in its Backlash preview. "And now there's speculation on what Cena could be doing on the show."
The most-discussed angle is also the most polarising — that Cena could end up being Danhausen's mystery tag-team partner.
"Social media rumours suggest that Cena could end up being Danhausen's mystery partner," the report continued. "Although it's worth noting that there's no credible reports indicating that this is indeed the plan. Cena coming out of retirement just after five months to team with a comedic character would be a very bold choice. And WWE would deserve a ton of backlash, pun intended, if they decide to go down this route."
The Danhausen camp has fed the fire. "It's no secret that John Cena has been a massive fan of the Danhausen character," the source noted, "sharing a moment at WrestleMania 42 together and also Cena posting his face on his Instagram account. You can tell that he loves the character, so it wouldn't be far-fetched to see them tag up."
The second major theory is that Cena will use Backlash as the platform for a significant non-wrestling announcement. The WWE has form here — Pat McAfee's much-hyped Smackdown announcement turned out to be a 25% discount on WrestleMania 42 Night 1.
"One of the most popular suggested this will be a Club WWE announcement," the report said. "Whilst this makes sense from a business perspective, we can't rule out this announcement receiving boos as it's incredibly underwhelming."
The more dramatic version of the announcement theory points to a future WrestleMania venue reveal. "Another popular rumour right now is that Cena will announce a future WrestleMania in Florida," the source explained. "Cena has been known to be involved in these types of announcements in the past. So this looks like a possible outcome. Right now, the current favourite for hosting WrestleMania 44 will be Nashville, Tennessee at the Nissan Stadium, as it was reported that WWE is in active negotiations with them."
Cena's WrestleMania 42 farewell, alongside the Danhausen interaction, was supposed to be the soft landing. Five months later, the company is leaving every door slightly ajar — a quick comeback for a one-off PPV, a corporate marketing milestone, or a major venue reveal that sets up the road to WrestleMania 44 long before fans expected to hear about it.
What is clear is that Tampa will be the latest test of WWE's ability to deliver on a heavily-hyped reveal. With CM Punk, Roman Reigns and Bron Breakker already in the storyline mix, Cena's appearance — whatever form it takes — is positioned to play a significant role in shaping the rest of the post-WrestleMania calendar.
