Key Takeaways

  • 1."It’s unclear if the 52-year-old winner of 11 grands prix will return for the remaining three rounds of the season at Monza, Fuji, and Bahrain," said a team spokesperson.
  • 2."Missing out on Le Mans is significant for me.
  • 3.I’ve achieved the Indy 500 and F1 title, and Le Mans is a big part of that dream," Villeneuve shared previously in anticipation of his return.

In a surprising move, Vanwall has decided to replace 1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve with IMSA SportsCar Championship victor Tristan Vautier for the upcoming Le Mans 24 Hours event scheduled for June. This decision marks a notable shift for the team as they prepare for their return to this prestigious race.

Villeneuve, who was anticipated to make his return to Le Mans, has been benched by the team due to struggles with performance throughout the season. "It’s unclear if the 52-year-old winner of 11 grands prix will return for the remaining three rounds of the season at Monza, Fuji, and Bahrain," said a team spokesperson.

The Canadian driver had been part of Vanwall’s efforts in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) this year, alongside teammates Tom Dillmann and Esteban Guerreri in their Vandervell 680 non-hybrid LMH car. Unfortunately, Villeneuve's performance was hampered, as he faced a series of setbacks, including a crash during the Sebring Prologue and a race-ending collision with Francesco Castellacci's Ferrari GTE car at Spa.

"It wasn’t the kind of results we were hoping for, and it’s disappointing for everyone involved," admitted Villeneuve after the Spa incident, expressing frustration over his challenges on track.

In addition to these mishaps, a brake failure led to another incident at Portimao in April, which further compounded his difficulties this season. The scenario has led to speculation about Villeneuve's potential to pursue the coveted Triple Crown of Motorsports, which entails victories at the Indianapolis 500, Le Mans 24 Hours, and either the Monaco Grand Prix or an F1 world title.

"Missing out on Le Mans is significant for me. I wanted to complete the Triple Crown. I’ve achieved the Indy 500 and F1 title, and Le Mans is a big part of that dream," Villeneuve shared previously in anticipation of his return.

Taking Villeneuve's place, Vautier brings with him ample racing experience, having won the Sebring 12 Hours in 2021 with JDC-Miller Motorsports. He has been competing in the European Le Mans Series this season with the LMP2 squad Algarve Pro Racing. "I'm excited about this opportunity to step in at such a prestigious event. Le Mans has always been on my radar, and I hope to deliver a strong performance for Vanwall," said Vautier, highlighting his enthusiasm for the upcoming race.

Previously, Vautier raced in IMSA for JDC-Miller from 2018 until the team’s transition to a new customer Porsche 963, which did not include Vautier following the conclusion of the prior season. This transition to Vanwall, however, represents a fresh start for him on a grander stage.

As the WEC season progresses, the decision to replace Villeneuve with Vautier underscores the need for competitive performance in a highly challenging environment. Vanwall's shift as they aim for success in the legendary Le Mans race has certainly raised eyebrows within the motorsport community. With their eyes now set on the June event, the chemistry between Vautier and the Vanwall team could prove pivotal in what remains of the season.

As Le Mans approaches, all eyes will be on Vautier to see how he handles the pressure and potential of racing at one of the sport's most iconic events. Meanwhile, Villeneuve's future remains uncertain as fans and analysts alike await updates on his possible return to competitive racing.
