Roman Reigns walked into Backlash 2026 a Tribal Chief and walked out of it a champion in name only, after Jacob Fatu's post-match assault painted the Samoan Werewolf as the unhinged force WWE will struggle to keep off the title for long.
The Tampa main event at the Benchmark International Arena hinged on an exposed turnbuckle, with Reigns desperately escaping a second Tongan Death Grip by driving Fatu face-first into bare steel before flattening the challenger with a final spear for the three count. The win retained Reigns' WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but the closing image belonged entirely to Fatu.
Cultaholic's Tom Campbell described the cinematic build to the finish. "Fu contemplates his next move and decides to go for yet another mighty moonsalt. Only this time, Reigns gets the knees up to counter it. This turns into a slugfest between the two beefy boys. And he goes on and on until Roman staggers back and collapses into the corner and leading to two hip attacks from Jacob Fatu. He goes on to lock in the Tongan death grip and Roman desperately fights out gouging Jacob's eyes and pushing him into the corner so the referee gets squished."
Reigns finally found his opening with the exposed buckle. "Roman rips off the turnbuckle pad in desperation and drives Jacob face first into the exposed steel and a spear will follow to give Roman Reigns the three and barely retain his world heavyweight title," Campbell wrote.
Fatu's reaction sparked a near-riot. "Postmatch and I rate Jacob Fatu attacks Roman with the referee catching some strays as well," Campbell continued. "Fu has gone feral, deathgripping Roman Reigns despite the very best efforts of the WWE officials to get him away. Fu does eventually break off only to return and reapply the Tongan death grip. He stands tall over an unconscious foaming at the mouth Roman Reigns holding aloft Roman's World Heavyweight Championship to close out WWE Backlash."
Wrestling Battle filled in the chaos. "After the match, Jacob Fatu snapped and launched a vicious post-match assault on Roman Reigns. Repeatedly locking in the brutal Tongan death grip, Fatu ignored officials' attempts to intervene, even attacking referee Sean Bennett with a Samoan drop. Chaos erupted as security, referees, and road agents rushed the ring, with Hurricane Shane Helms taking a super-kick and Raw General Manager Adam Pearce being thrown aside. Though Fatu briefly backed away, he returned to choke Reigns again, leaving the champion gasping over his title belt. Bloodied and unhinged, Jacob Fatu stood tall, holding the championship as the show ended."
Fatu's resilience throughout the match made the post-match all the more dramatic. Campbell highlighted moments where the challenger looked unbreakable. "Reigns catches Fatu over the ropes and once in control, he focuses his offence on the Tongan death gripper of Fatu. Roman is planting Jacob with strikes when Fatu suddenly floors Roman before driving him into the ring post. Reigns is able to dodge a flying Fatu to give him an opening to cream cracker Jacob with a Superman punch. But Jacob gets up at one like nothing happened."
Wrestling Battle pointed to the moment that defined the contest: "Roman responded by targeting Fatu's injured hand and arm, slowing down the challenger with calculated offence. Despite that, Jacob continued to overpower the champion, even power bombing Reigns through the announce desk, and repeatedly surviving signature attacks, including multiple Superman punches and a spear. Fatu shocked the crowd with his toughness, kicking out at one after Roman's first Superman punch, and later surviving another spear."
The finish all but guarantees a rematch. WWE's storyline architecture has been engineering the slow-burn break between the Bloodline's elder statesman and its lone wolf for over a year, and Tampa's closing image of Fatu cradling the title over a prone Reigns will fast-track the chase. The next premium live event will almost certainly headline with the pair settling matters, although a Money in the Bank detour cannot be ruled out as Fatu's path to gold.
