Finland's Henrik Haapalainen has booked his ticket to the 2026 CrossFit Games at the Far East Throwdown after a dramatic close from Belgian rival Sven Geens, who failed his final rep on a 225-pound hang power clean to lose his Games qualifying spot.
The Far East Throwdown ran as one of the in-person 2026 CrossFit Semifinals, with one qualifying spot on offer in each of the men's, women's and team divisions. The men's race went down to the final event of the weekend, with Haapalainen, Geens and New Zealand's Hiko O Te Rangi Curtis all in the picture for the lone qualifying place.
Geens "struggled on his last rep of a 225-pound hang power clean on the final event," eliminating him from Games contention and handing the spot to Haapalainen. The Finn finished on 567 points, three clear of Curtis on 546 and 33 ahead of Geens on 534. Riley Martin (495) and Matt Brady (474) rounded out the men's top five.
In the women's division, Italy's Siria Meha took the qualifying spot with a dominant 594 points, finishing 33 clear of Russia's Anna Ivanova (561) and 36 ahead of Korea's Dawon Jung (558). Samantha Pugh (549) and Arielle Sanders (456) completed the top five.
The team competition went to UK side CrossFit Aylesbury, who finished on 573 points to edge Team Enuf (567), Marvel Black (528), Seym (522) and Team Alltra One (522). Aylesbury secured one of the most contested team spots of the semifinal block.
The Far East Throwdown's structure - one qualifier per division - amplifies pressure on the closing events of the weekend, with athletes who have stayed in podium contention through the first two days often forced into all-or-nothing risk taking on the final test. The semifinal permitted only one qualifier per division, making every rep decisive.
For Haapalainen, the win is a marker of his rise through the European individual ranks. The Finn has been one of the fast-improving names on the European circuit and converts this Games qualifying place into his second consecutive trip to the championship.
Geens, by contrast, will not start the 2026 Games. The Belgian, a regular Games qualifier in recent years, will need to rely on the at-large qualification places via points or other criteria to make the field, but the missed rep on his final lift effectively closed the Far East Throwdown route.
Meha's blowout in the women's division was one of the tighter individual stat lines of the semifinal block. Her 594-point total was the second highest from any women's individual semifinal so far and confirms Italy's quietly building presence in the women's individual field.
The Far East Throwdown is one of several semifinals running across April and May ahead of the season-ending CrossFit Games.
