In a recent revelation, Leonardo Fornaroli and Richard Verschoor have opened up about their journeys to becoming members of the prestigious McLaren Driver Development Programme. This announcement marks a significant milestone for both drivers, particularly for Fornaroli, who clinched the Formula 2 championship in Qatar earlier this month.
As McLaren continues to shape their future talent, Fornaroli emphasized his excitement about the opportunity. "I chose McLaren because it was the best choice for my career and also it provides a very nice racing programme and developing programme," said Fornaroli, illustrating the motivations behind his decision.
The dialogue between Fornaroli and McLaren began following the race in Baku in late September. He acknowledged other teams' interest during this time but ultimately decided McLaren was the right fit. "It was a completely new and humbling experience, for me seeing all this interest. But McLaren was the best choice, and we closed the deal when we were in Qatar," he added.
When asked about his future in Formula 1, especially given that McLaren's current drivers are contracted until 2027, Fornaroli tactfully responded, stating, "putting all of that work in [myself going forward] is the best chance" of reaching F1. His focus now shifts to continuing his development, with further details on his next steps expected soon.
A crucial aspect of any driver's journey is the support received from their teams. While he hesitated to delve into specifics regarding financial backing for his racing programme, Fornaroli acknowledged the assistance he has already received. He shared a piece of inspiring advice from Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal: "The best thing he told me is that when I’m doing something both inside and outside the track, always put a goal in your mind. Because it’s like this: you’re going to achieve a great result and they’re your own goals."
Verschoor, who will transition to the sports car scene in the European Le Mans Series’ LMP2 prototype class next year, expressed his pride in joining McLaren. His partnership with the team not only signifies a new chapter but also promises opportunities for personal development. "There’s many opportunities within McLaren where first of all I can develop myself as a driver," Verschoor remarked enthusiastically.
His journey to McLaren started earlier this year when he approached Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO, after his victory in Jeddah. "After a race in Jeddah that I won, I decided to walk to [McLaren’s chief executive officer] Zak Brown, and that’s when things kind of kickstarted," he explained.
Despite initial hurdles, Verschoor noted that communication rekindled around Baku. "They spoke that they would like to consider me as their driver. And to be honest it was quite late that I signed the contract. Just before [Qatar]. It was a nerve-wracking few months, but very happy," he confessed, reflecting on the challenges preceding his signing with the team.
As both drivers embark on their journey with McLaren, their stories underline the significance of seizing opportunities and maintaining focus on long-term goals in the highly competitive world of motorsport. With their varying experiences and aspirations, Fornaroli and Verschoor are set to contribute to McLaren's legacy while carving their own paths in racing.
The outlook for both drivers is promising as they integrate into McLaren's framework, a team known for its commitment to development and excellence. With 2026 on the horizon, fans will be eager to see how these talented individuals will shape their careers and potentially make strides toward the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1.
