Matt Fitzpatrick delivered a masterclass in pressure golf, defeating world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the RBC Heritage to claim his second title at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Facing a raucous crowd chanting for the American favorite, Fitzpatrick remained composed and struck a magnificent 4-iron from 204 yards into a stiff breeze on the playoff hole. The shot sailed over the bunker and settled 13 feet from the pin, setting up the winning birdie.

"It was quite funny that the playoff was just going to keep playing on 18. I was thinking it was going difficult in a way to separate ourselves because it's such a difficult hole," Fitzpatrick said. "To do it how I did was special."

The victory marked a remarkable parallel to Fitzpatrick's 2021 Heritage triumph, when he defeated Jordan Spieth in a playoff on the same 18th hole. That time, he used a 9-iron for the winning approach. This time, facing much tougher conditions, the 4-iron proved equally spectacular.

Scheffler, who trailed by three shots with four holes remaining, forced the playoff with late birdies on holes 15 and 16, shooting 67 in the final round. His charge included perfect scrambling throughout the day, going 8-for-8 in up-and-down situations.

"In both weeks, I put myself behind the 8-ball going into the weekend and had really nice Saturdays and Sundays in order to get myself into contention," Scheffler said. "On Sunday, it's a shot here or there that makes a difference. This was one of those weeks where anytime Fitzy needed something to happen, he made something happen."

The drama unfolded when both players missed the 18th green well to the right in regulation. Scheffler executed a perfect chip to within a foot, while Fitzpatrick struggled with his first chip into the grain, coming up well short and missing a 20-foot par putt for his only bogey of the day.

In the playoff, Scheffler's approach proved disastrous as he fanned a 6-iron that landed 37 yards short of the hole. Despite a superb recovery pitch to 8 feet, he never got the chance to putt as Fitzpatrick rolled in his birdie.

The atmosphere was electric, with fans chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A!" throughout the final holes and playoff. Fitzpatrick's response was measured, lightly placing his finger to his ear in acknowledgment of the crowd's energy.

"I didn't get out of line in terms of no one was shouting on backswings or anything like that, which was great," Fitzpatrick said. "I'm all for it. I love the people ... they're supporting Scottie. You want golf to have an atmosphere. I'm paid so much money to be out there in front of those crowds. Having them chanting at you every week, it's a great feeling."

"However," he added with a smile, "there's no better feeling than coming out on top against that."

Fitzpatrick controlled the tournament from start to finish, beginning the final round with a three-shot lead and extending it early with birdies on two of the first three holes. He maintained at least a three-shot advantage until Si Woo Kim closed to within two shots with a birdie at the par-5 15th.

The victory represents Fitzpatrick's second win in the past month, following his triumph at the Valspar Championship. Both Fitzpatrick and Scheffler finished at 18-under 268, while Kim closed with a 68 to finish third at 17-under.

For Scheffler, it marked his second consecutive runner-up finish after coming from 12 shots back to finish one behind Rory McIlroy at the Masters. Despite the disappointment, he praised his opponent's clutch performance.

"He definitely earned the win, and he just played great golf," Scheffler said.

Fitzpatrick's triumph showcased his ability to thrive under pressure on one of the PGA Tour's most demanding closing holes, cementing his reputation as one of golf's premier clutch performers.
