Two of golf's brightest amateur prospects stole the show on day one of the 2026 Chevron Championship, with Farah O'Keefe and eighteen-year-old Yun So Young both opening their LPGA major campaigns with four-under-par rounds of 68 at Memorial Park in Houston.
O'Keefe, the top-ranked college golfer in the United States and a University of Texas product, played the kind of ball-striking round that has marked her collegiate career. Her only blemish came on her final hole, a bogey the Golf Channel broadcast described as perplexing, following what it called an unfortunate tee-ball at the end of an otherwise spotless scorecard.
"Only bogey. Farah O'Keefe coming at her final hole," the broadcast noted as the Texan closed her round.
With her mother, a school teacher, unable to travel mid-week, the amateur's family plans hinged on the cut. "Gets off work at 3:00 tomorrow and then plans to come down. So, she needs to be around for the weekend," the broadcast said. "At the moment, she certainly will be."
Yun So Young made arguably the more remarkable debut. The South Korean, who claimed the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in February, carded a 68 in her first ever LPGA start. Her draw off the tee drew early notice.
"Hint of draw. Seen players go long over the back and she's doing that right side of the green drawing," the commentary team said of a deft approach at one of Memorial Park's tabletop greens.
Her patience on the greens drew praise throughout her round. "Really patient in the transition there. Oh, nice," the broadcast said after a key putt on the par-three sixth.
"How about this story? Four under, first ever LPGA start," one commentator exclaimed after Yun holed another key save.
Both amateurs sit inside the top ten after round one, one stroke behind co-leaders Somi Lee of South Korea and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit, who each fired 67s. Their rounds reflect a shift at the top of the amateur game, with college golfers and teenage internationals increasingly making deep runs in LPGA majors.
"That's very impressive performance," the commentary team said of Yun's round. "Somewhat overshadowed right now by Farah O'Keefe."
The Chevron Championship, the first of the LPGA's five majors, awards its winner a nine-million-dollar prize pool. It is being held at Memorial Park Golf Course for the first time, with the tournament having relocated to Texas three years ago from its long-time California desert home.
With a weekend that now looks inevitable for both amateurs, Thursday's 68s suggest the college-to-pro pipeline continues to deliver some of the most compelling stories in women's golf.
