McLaren Racing has recently welcomed three new talents to its Driver Development Programme, prominently featuring the newly crowned Formula 2 Champion, Leonardo Fornaroli. Joining him are fellow F2 competitor Richard Verschoor and the promising 15-year-old karting champion Christian Costoya.
Fornaroli clinched the Formula 2 title in dramatic fashion during the Feature Race in Qatar, where he secured a second-place finish. With four victories and five podiums this season, the Italian driver, who is only 20 years old, continues a remarkable trajectory, having previously claimed the FIA Formula 3 championship last year.
“Winning both the FIA Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles has been an important step in my journey, and I’m motivated to take the next step in my development through the programme as I work toward my ultimate goal of racing at the highest level,” said Fornaroli about his transition to McLaren.
As Fornaroli becomes part of the McLaren family, he will engage in test and development duties, aligning his career with the team's commitment to nurturing young talent. Fellow new recruit, Richard Verschoor, is also making headlines as he currently holds third place in the Formula 2 standings ahead of the upcoming season finale in Abu Dhabi. The Dutch driver has also showcased his skills by winning four races during this campaign.
“I’m delighted to be part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme. It’s a special moment, and I’m grateful for McLaren’s support in allowing me to continue my development,” said Verschoor, expressing his enthusiasm for the road ahead.
The addition of these two F2 drivers is complemented by the inclusion of Christian Costoya, a karting sensation from Spain. At just 15 years old, Costoya has already secured multiple karting championships and is set to make his debut in single-seater racing at the 2026 F4 Middle East Championship, taking place at the Yas Marina Circuit from January 16-18.
“I am very excited to join the McLaren Driver Development Programme and become part of their talent pipeline. It is great to get the team’s support and be in an environment that is known for developing great drivers,” Costoya remarked, underlining his aspirations within the McLaren framework.
Alessandro Alunni Bravi, Chief Business Affairs Officer of McLaren Racing, emphasized the significance of these signings: “McLaren Racing are delighted to welcome two of Formula 2’s current leading drivers in this year’s Champion Leonardo Fornaroli and former Championship contender and fellow front-runner Richard Verschoor, along with proven karting champion, Christian Costoya.”
Bravi continued, “All three talented drivers have shown great race craft with multiple wins this season, alongside a number of impressive performances in their respective championships. It is a key priority that we continue to develop our talent pipeline to provide options for all of our expanding racing teams.”
Last month, McLaren announced the addition of Ella Hakkinen and Ella Stevens to further bolster its Driver Development Programme. This ongoing commitment to scouting and nurturing emerging talent signifies McLaren's determination to maintain a robust pipeline of drivers ready for the demands of Formula 1 and beyond.
With plans for 2026 on the horizon, the recent signings mark an exciting chapter for Fornaroli, Verschoor, and Costoya as they embark on their distinct paths within McLaren's developmental structure. Fans and followers of the sport will be keenly watching their progress in the coming years, as well as what this means for McLaren's future aspirations in the racing arena.
