The 2026 Wanda Diamond League season will no longer open in Doha after organisers confirmed the meet has been postponed from May 8 to June 19 "should conditions allow", a decision driven by the ongoing Middle East war and its implications for athlete and spectator safety.
Doha had been scheduled to host the first Diamond League event of the year on May 8 at the Qatar Sports Club. Organisers said the postponement was agreed after discussions with Qatari authorities, meeting organisers and stakeholders.
"The Diamond League will continue to monitor developments in the Middle East in the coming weeks," the statement read. "The series and meeting organisers remain committed to delivering the highest level of safe and secure competition for athletes, media and spectators."
The rescheduled June 19 date also brings a venue change to the temperature-regulated Khalifa International Stadium, a move organisers said would allow athletes to compete "safely even in hotter conditions" when summer temperatures in Qatar regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
The shuffle pushes the season opener to Shanghai on May 16, with Doha now slated as the eighth meeting of the 15-meet 2026 season. When it runs, Doha will sit between the Bislett Games in Oslo on June 10 and the Meeting de Paris on June 28.
The wider sporting calendar across the Middle East has been battered this spring. Formula One cancelled the 2026 Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekends in April, and the 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina - originally set for Doha on March 27 - was also cancelled. The U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on major Iranian cities including Tehran on February 28, prompting Iranian retaliation against Israel and U.S. air bases in Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain. A two-week U.S.-Iran cease-fire was announced this week alongside plans to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Diamond League organisers have stressed their commitment to delivering the postponed Doha meet this season, but the contingencies built into the new June window - including the indoor venue - reflect the uncertainty that now hangs over one of the sport's most established Middle Eastern stops.
