Daniel Ricciardo is eager to make waves upon his return to Formula 1 with AlphaTauri, beginning at the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix. This comeback will mark the end of a six-month hiatus from the grid after he parted ways with McLaren at the close of the 2022 season. Transitioning into a reserve role with Red Bull, Ricciardo engaged in simulator work and participated in a Pirelli tyre test at Silverstone, but he now steps back into full racing action in place of Nyck de Vries, who was let go earlier this season.
Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Ricciardo expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "It’s good, it’s really good! I enjoyed this… Call it six months off – I think it was really good for me. But the more races I started to attend, the more sim I started to do, I was certainly getting the bug back, so to speak."
Reconnecting with his passion for racing, Ricciardo described his recent experience in the car: "Then jumping into the car a few days ago, I was like, ‘Oh yeah!’ It all felt very normal. It was one of those ones, the very first lap, ‘Oh, this is fast!’ then within a few it’s, ‘OK, I want to go faster now!’, so it was really good.”
The 34-year-old Australian emphasized that he remained prepared for a possible return, while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of F1. "I stayed ready at all times to ensure I could fully embrace any opportunity to return to the grid," Ricciardo revealed. "It was definitely in the back of my mind."
His reintegration into the Red Bull family was catalyzed by a notable conversation with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko. "I was like, ‘OK, let’s just hear what he has to say,’" Ricciardo recalled. This led him to feel a sense of familiarity returning to the team.
"I didn’t really need to think much about it. I feel at home; I feel like I’m kind of just going through it all again. These were the calls I used to get and these were the moments they used to kind of throw in front of us. There was no question that I was going to say yes,” he said.
After facing a challenging time at McLaren, Ricciardo noted that his confidence had diminished but believes he has reclaimed his former self. "Getting back to Red Bull and just kind of the reception I had walking back into that team was really kind of, in a positive way, a little bit overwhelming," he remarked.
He expressed relief and joy as he started to rediscover that competitive spirit. "Once I’d done a few sim sessions and started feeling like myself again, it then just kind of brought me back to normal Daniel, where I was falling back in love and ready to go again."
Looking ahead to his partnership with teammate Yuki Tsunoda, Ricciardo recognizes the obstacles ahead for AlphaTauri, who currently sit last in the constructors' standings. Ricciardo aims to make the most of this situation.
“This is a challenge, but challenges are what make this sport exciting,” he stated with optimism.
In anticipation of the upcoming races, Ricciardo noted, "I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and helping the team turn things around. There’s potential, not just for me but for AlphaTauri to be competitive again.”
With his sights set on the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ricciardo remains poised to show that the thrill of racing never truly waned, and he is ready to reclaim his place among the sport's elite.
