Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg has spent the bulk of his debut season being studied by basketball's old guard. On Thursday night, it was the 19-year-old who did the studying — and what he saw from Nikola Jokic left him picking his jaw up off the floor.
The reigning MVP put together one of the most absurd stat lines of the season against Dallas: 23 points, 21 rebounds and 19 assists, a near-triple-double of almost comic proportions. Flagg, the consensus face of the next generation, was asked afterwards to put the performance in context. His answer read less like a teammate-style compliment and more like a confession.
Flagg told reporters he is not sure he will ever reach that level, calling Jokic's influence on the game "incredible". The rookie described the Serbian's near triple-double as a reality check, admitting he was in "total awe" watching a three-time MVP make 21 boards and 19 assists look routine.
It was a rare moment of public deference from a player whose pre-draft scouting reports leaned heavily on words like "poise" and "maturity". Flagg has already dropped multiple 25-point nights in his rookie year. He did not offer a statistical comparison — he offered surrender.
That reaction is not an outlier inside the league. Jokic's numbers this season continue to defy orthodoxy for a seven-footer. His ability to read passing angles and grind out rebounds in traffic has already forced the Mavericks, and virtually every other Western Conference team, to rewrite their defensive coverages on the fly.
For Flagg, the education comes with real stakes. Dallas remains in the thick of the play-in picture and any deep run would likely mean facing Denver again in the spring. The rookie will be asked to front up against the very player he just watched pick his team apart.
Jokic, for his part, said little. He did not celebrate the line. He did not mention it. He answered a question about his own accomplishment with a shrug and a compliment for his teammates — the same pattern he has followed across a career that now includes three MVPs and a championship.
The gap between Jokic's performance and his demeanour is precisely what captured Flagg. The rookie did not focus on the scoring. If nothing else, he appeared to understand the assignment: however gifted the 19-year-old is, the standard he is chasing right now is a Serbian centre in a cold building pulling down offensive boards like it is a warm-up drill.
