Cameron Smith wants LIV Golf to keep doubling down on home-country events, and the Ripper GC captain pointed to the now-famous Adelaide crowd as the clearest proof of what can happen when local fans get behind a local team.
Speaking at LIV Golf's 2026 launch event, Smith described the Adelaide experience as a genuine competitive edge, one of the few weeks on the professional calendar where home advantage is tangible.
"Yeah, I mean, it's it's unreal. That's such a cool week for us. Um, the town of Adelaide as well really gets around the event. Um, they come out and and they root for us. I mean, you saw it in the playoff against Louis a couple years ago. They they were rooting for us to win and um, it's it's cool to have a home crowd advantage like that. You don't you don't get that very often," Smith said.
He framed Adelaide as a template rather than an exception.
"And um I think for all of these guys, you know, we have an event in the UK, event in South Africa now. Hopefully with with years to come, we can get more home events, you know, for even for the US guys like Bubba. I'm sure you want one. Um I think I think that's the way forward and um yeah, I can't wait for it to happen."
Smith's message carries some weight inside LIV. Ripper GC has been one of the league's most marketable teams since its formation, and the Adelaide stop has become a showcase event for the circuit. Expanding the number of home territories is clearly part of how LIV wants to build a year-round identity rather than a travelling exhibition.
Asked about broader developments in the golf world at a time when reunification talks between LIV and the PGA Tour remain a recurring topic, Smith was direct about where his loyalties lie.
"Um, I mean, I I really don't have any thoughts. I haven't had a lot of time to think about it, but I I know I'm here to stay. I'm I'm here to support Liv. I'm uh a captain of a great team and and a great group of people. So, um I'm happy where I am. I'm proud of where I am. I think we're doing many great things, particularly in Australia, and um I can't wait for this league to keep growing."
For Ripper GC, the priority in 2026 is turning the Adelaide adrenaline into more consistent team results across the season. The squad has been a magnet for marketing and merchandise, but the on-course finishes have not always matched the atmosphere. Smith's public pitch for more home events is also, implicitly, a pitch for more moments like the 2023 playoff against Louis Oosthuizen that he referenced, the sort of occasion when the crowd and the contender are in the same shirt.
If LIV wants to keep growing, Smith's instinct is that the path runs through giving every one of its stars a week that feels like Adelaide.
