The 2026 European Outdoor Archery Championships open in Antalya, Türkiye on Monday, with continental titles, ranking points and qualification places for the 2027 European Games in Istanbul all on the line across seven days of competition on the Mediterranean coast.
The biannual championships, governed by World Archery Europe, run from May 18 to 24 and draw a near-full elite contingent. Mathias Fullerton (Denmark), the world No. 1 in compound men, headlines the men's field. Compound women's world No. 2 Ella Gibson of Great Britain — the reigning indoor world champion — leads the women. In recurve, Spain's Andres Temiño Mediel (world No. 4) and Britain's Penny Healey (world No. 7) are the headline names in their respective draws.
For most championships, the title alone is the prize. Antalya carries an extra layer. As an Olympic build year — Los Angeles 2028 sits two and a half years out — the Europeans do not directly distribute Olympic quotas. They do, however, distribute quotas for the 2027 European Games, which Istanbul will host in summer 2027.
World Archery briefed competitors on the format in advance.
"In Olympic years the Europeans are a major qualifying tournament; this time around there is a secondary tournament on the Friday to qualify athletes for the Istanbul 2027 European Games," the governing body said in its preview.
The Friday qualifying event sits inside the main championship schedule. Archers will shoot the full European programme through Monday-to-Thursday and then enter a separate qualification round on the Friday before the team and individual finals on the weekend. The mechanism gives stage-two stars who shot in Shanghai — and headline names sitting out the World Cup tour — the same shot at Istanbul tickets.
For host nation Türkiye, Antalya is the second consecutive major outdoor event on home soil after the Istanbul Foil World Cup leg in fencing earlier in the month. Recurve world No. 3 Mete Gazoz, who took silver in Shanghai's individual final to China's Li Mengqi, is among the home stars expected to feature.
For Britain's Penny Healey, Antalya is the latest stop in a season she has used to rebuild after a quiet 2025 — her stage-two performances did not include a medal, but her ranking points have lifted her to seventh in the world. Healey's Antalya draw will be one of the early-week stories.
In compound, Denmark's Fullerton has had the most consistent year of any senior shooter, with a stage-one bronze in March and a stage-two semifinal in Shanghai. Compound team competition, where Denmark has not won a senior European gold since 2018, is a particular target.
The European Championships also serve as a measuring point for federations rebuilding for the LA28 cycle. France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy have all sent senior squads boosted by Olympic returnees, while smaller programmes — Estonia's Lisell Jaatma fresh off Shanghai gold, Türkiye's Berkim Tumer and Ireland's Catherine Healy — will look to convert form into European medals.
The World Cup tour resumes in Madrid in early June for stage three. From there, the road runs through stage four in Paris in July and stage five in Tianjin in early September, ahead of the outdoor World Championships in Madrid later that month.
