The 2026 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft produced the kind of opening pick that reshapes how scouts talk about position value for years to come. With the first overall selection, the Archers took short-stick defensive midfielder Aidan Maguire — the first shortie ever drafted first overall in a professional lacrosse draft.
Short-stick defensive midfielders have long been prized inside rosters but historically treated as mid-to-late first-round picks at best. Their value — elite ground ball rates, transition defense, and the ability to lock down opposing midfielders without burning a long-pole possession — has frequently been credited in championship-winning PLL teams but rarely reflected at the top of drafts.
The Archers, a franchise built around tempo and transition, made a deliberate statement by breaking from convention. Head coach Chris Bates and the Archers' front office had signalled during the lead-up that they were prepared to prioritise positional fit over traditional scarcity. By taking Maguire at one, the Archers both secured a two-way motor in the midfield and put every other PLL front office on notice: the draft board is no longer a referendum on attackmen and long poles alone.
Maguire's collegiate résumé made the pick defensible beyond its novelty. He exited his senior year among the national leaders in caused turnovers and ground balls among short-sticks, and his offensive efficiency when pushing the ball off change-of-possession gave the Archers a package few peers could match. The Archers' coaching staff has privately indicated Maguire will be asked to play heavy minutes from day one — both at SSDM and, selectively, as an offensive-transition threat when matchups favour him.
The draft order quickly produced another significant storyline. Fourth overall, Army West Point's Evan Plunkett was selected by the Denver Outlaws — tying the highest PLL draft position ever achieved by an Army lacrosse player.
"I am happy for Evan to be selected in the PLL draft," Army head coach Joe Alberici said. "He has worked incredibly hard to be his very best and, in doing so, has helped to elevate our whole program. Throughout his career, he has been his best in our biggest moments. When the time comes, there is no doubt that he will do the same for the Denver Outlaws."
Plunkett exits West Point as the program's active leader with 170 career points, and his fourth-overall selection matches the draft positions previously reached by John Glesener in the 2015 MLL Draft and Tom Rigney in the 2020 PLL Draft.
Further down the first round, Tufts midfielder Jack Regnery heard his name called 20th overall, a selection that underlines the continued flow of Division III talent into professional lacrosse. Regnery's athletic profile and special-teams utility gave him a clear pathway to a roster spot with the drafting franchise.
Across conferences, the 2026 PLL Draft was dominated by ACC and Big Ten talent. Nine players from the ACC and nine from the Big Ten were chosen in the first three rounds, underscoring how concentrated the collegiate pipeline to the PLL has become. Patriot League programs, led by Army, added to that total.
The league's growth continues to produce more competitive bidding for collegiate talent. With PLL rosters still capped and championship windows tight, the Archers' decision to pay shortie value at the top of the board may well be studied across front offices heading into 2027. Maguire, for his part, is already in the Archers' voluntary workouts, preparing for a PLL season in which the novelty of his selection will quickly give way to the expectations that come with it.
