Ludvig Aberg delivered a masterclass performance at TPC Sawgrass on Friday, firing a 9-under 63 to seize a two-shot lead heading into the weekend at The Players Championship.
The Swedish star got off to a scorching start, reaching 5-under through his opening four holes before maintaining that momentum throughout his round. Aberg's highlight reel included two spectacular chip-ins – a birdie on the 4th hole and an eagle on the par-5 ninth that helped him card a front-nine 29, tying the Stadium Course record.
"I think my mind is very good when it's simple, and when things are very easy, and that's what I've felt like I've been able to do over the last couple of weeks," Aberg said.
The 24-year-old sits at 12-under 132 on a course he occasionally calls home, having chosen Ponte Vedra Beach as his residence after finishing at Texas Tech. Despite his familiarity with the area, Aberg hadn't played the Stadium Course this year until a Tuesday practice round.
Xander Schauffele trails by two shots after posting a solid 65, highlighted by hitting all 14 fairways in regulation. The two-time major champion had just one blemish – a careless three-putt bogey on the par-3 13th when he missed a putt just over 2 feet.
"Definitely nice to hit all of them, especially on this property," Schauffele said. "For the most part, I felt like I was in control and felt like I was attacking the golf course versus playing defensive."
While Aberg dominated the leaderboard, the day's drama centered around world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler's fight to make the cut. The reigning Masters champion, who entered with the longest active cut streak on tour at 69 tournaments, found himself in serious trouble late in his round.
After missing birdie opportunities and bogeying the 14th hole, Scheffler's position became precarious when he missed a 30-inch par putt on the par-5 16th, leaving him at 2-over with the treacherous 17th island green still to navigate.
Scheffler managed to find dry land on 17 for par before facing an must-make situation on 18. Standing 14 shots behind the leader, anything worse than par would have ended his weekend prematurely – his first missed cut since August 2022.
The pressure moment saw Scheffler deliver when it mattered most. He striped a 3-wood down the fairway, hit his approach to 8 feet, and calmly rolled in the birdie putt for a 73 to secure his weekend spot.
Rory McIlroy also navigated some late tension, with his recovering back feeling better but his putter causing concern. The world No. 2 birdied the par-5 ninth to close out a 71 and ensure his weekend participation. Both McIlroy and Scheffler sit at 1-over 145.
Cameron Young continued his strong recent form with a 67, positioning himself three shots back. The talented American, who captured his first PGA Tour victory last summer and starred for Team USA in the Ryder Cup, has historically struggled at Sawgrass but appears to have found his rhythm.
"I feel if you're not decisive, if you're unsure of what you want to do, it can really kind of rear its head at you," Young said about the challenging layout.
Justin Thomas bounced back from a disappointing return at Bay Hill, following rounds of 79-79 with consecutive 68s to reach 8-under 136. His second round featured a highlight-reel eagle on the par-5 11th after a wayward approach shot.
"Pretty sick chip," Thomas said of his pitch-and-run that found the bottom of the cup for eagle.
With ideal scoring conditions featuring sunshine, light winds, and receptive greens, the stage is set for an exciting weekend as players chase Aberg's commanding lead at one of golf's most iconic venues.
